Split House investigates the sense of affinity for a site and the privacy within a residence created by the elements that distinguish the single-family home from a multi-family residence: access to green space, multiple levels, and varied volumes. Rather than simply scale down the owner unit to generate the tenant’s space, Split House creates two user-specific units that share an envelope. Each unit features a range of sociopetal and sociofugal spaces, with multiple means of engaging the outdoors. A zig-zagging buffer wall, packed with program, provides each unit with the acoustic privacy that defines a single-family residence.
